Your London wedding - your floral needs

By: Nita Hannibal

The easiest place to begin with your wedding party floral planning is with the bride. The bridal bouquet has the starring role at your wedding and it will be with you as you walk down the aisle, in your wedding photographs, right until the end of the night when it is thrown to your hopeful female friends and relatives!

Planning your bridal bouquet can be stressful as there are so many bouquet options to choose from now. A great place to start is to show your florist your dress, or a picture of it, or simply some swatches of the material so that they can see which colours to use to compliment your special outfit.

The type of dress you wear will help you to determine what style of bouquet to choose. A sleek and simple dress will be complimented by a clean and simple bouquet, whereas a busier dress will require a more dramatic bouquet to help it to stand out and compliment your dress rather than get lost against it.

It always helps to seek out floral inspiration before you discuss your wedding ideas with your florist. As well as asking your florist for their ideas and portfolio of previous work, check out wedding websites, bridal shows and magazines. If you see a particular flower that you like, take a picture and take this along to your florist.

Think about your wedding venue. Is it a modern property? A church? Or a historic building. Let the property type guide you a to the kind of floral designs that will fit in. Traditional arrangements tend to be better suited to churches and country house weddings, while sleeker modern buildings can afford sleeker, modern designs.

As well as your bridal bouquet, there are many other ways that you can add floral decoration to your appearance on the big day. You can add flowers to your dress, or alternatively add a small selection of flowers to your hair. Choose flowers that compliment your hair colour, as well as your skin colour, eyes and of course your wedding gown.

Choosing flowers to add to your hair or wedding dress means considering hardier varieties that will stand up to a day of wear. Your florist will be able to recommend the most suitable flower types, or you may want to opt for silk flowers. It is very hard to tell modern silk flowers from the real thing these days, and as well as being long lasting and sturdy, they can also be easier to shape and fix into place.

Use your bridal bouquet to coordinate your bouquets and posies for your bridesmaids and flower girls. You can choose the same flowers, only in a simpler and smaller arrangement. Smaller children can become bored of holding a posy all day long however, so you may want to consider a flower in the hair or a pretty wrist corsage instead.
